No one in the US says "brill". I haven't seen it typed either until now... Anyways, cool art work. Hope it makes it in the game.

I think GW:EN is going to show us just what ANet can really do when they don't have to worry about starter areas and just concentrate on lvl 20 areas

Default The power of wisdom vs the power of brute force

My guess would be that you don't hold concept art in high regard if you said, "It's just concept art...," and that's okay. Other people DO hold concept art in high regard... like the people at CAA (very prestigious company in the entertainment industry) who are sponsoring this contest and the people on this forum who are taken aback by this piece of work... and that's okay too.

"It's just concept art..." might also indicate that you're not a fan of the award winning Daniel Dociu, and that's okay. Many of the people who are awed by this piece of work ARE fans of his, and that's okay too.

I'm a fan of concept art, so I've looked at every piece of art on that page, and I have to say, as brilliant as I believe Defeated Dragon to be (I'm also a fan of Daniel Dociu's), Mr Dociu is up against some stiff competition. There's some great work there.

Some personal observations on some of the art I viewed:

Defeated Dragon by Daniel Dociu - There are opposing qualities in this dragon. In Chinese mythology, dragons represent the truest kind of power there is, the kind of power that comes from wisdom. I find it interesting that Mr. Dociu has used rams' horns for the dragon and that the head, albeit very dragonesque, is in the attitude of a ram on the attack. Rams represent physical power or brute force, and brute force is easily defeated by just a little wisdom. I suspect it was the presence and exertion of the brute force so visible in this illustration that caused this dragon's defeat.

View Over the Pixel Ocean by Chris Delay and Andrew Bainbridge - Interesting... it feels to me that these guys are defining the journey to the end more than the end. I got sucked in and, out of habit, started UV mapping the terrain "by hand" (there are ample opportunities there)... but I had the presence of mind to stop myself... PHEW

Yeah MOST of the concept art is never implemented into the game, or is downsized. eg: Floating mega castles in Vabbi... endless beatiful plains in Pre sear, giant statues, ENOURMOUS clasms...

Anywho, that looks sick!!!

Yeah... I don't know. Although it says the game is from Introversion Software... and there's something about Ambrosia software too, maybe they're saying the software used for the concept art was Darwinia because they took a screenshot in the game... maybe? I did a google search and found some article referring to Darwinia software as well, but I'm not interested enough to research it further. The game look doesn't appeal to me... and I could never play it because I'd sooooo want to UV map it every minute I was in it.

It reminds me alot of Central/Native Americans.. Maybe the Asuras are Central America, and the people in this picture are more related to the Native Americans in North America?

Thats some sick stuff. I wonder if Anet will sell paintings or posters of their artwork.

I just noticed the little dock by the foot of the statue dragon and it seems to be an istani port, because of the colors. And isnt GW:EN suppose to be in dungeons? Whats with the wide open space.

It's huge disappointment for us that these concepts art aren't being implemented. What makes me as an artist to squeeze my mind to come up with this brilliant work to find that developers aren't gonna implement this in game for x, y and z reasons and they will put it just as loading screen. , i wish Gaile can enlighten us of how these concept arts being approved to be in game or not ?!!

I wonder why this is named a dragon. It looks more like a bison.

By all love for the art of Daniel Dociu, we already have seen more interesting concept art and ingame screenshots of GW:EN.

I am not sure if this artwork is part of GWEN at all, there are numerous pics floating around that never made it into any chapter.

Thumbs up

There are two more....
Clockwork:This one i'm not positive this is actually from Daniel Dociu but it definitely looks like his work. The 2006 kinda throws me for a loop but it follows suit with the numbering in the hyperlink (63,64,65).
Skybridge
This has already been around for a bit, but figured some may want this as a wallpaper.

those are definitely dociu's. a fine inspiration that man is.

I have to agree that as inspiring as the concept art is for guild wars, the actual in-game counterpart does not do justice to reflect the scale and grandeur they're suppose to be. But then again, alot of these concepts were very much over-the-top on their scale, and completely disregards the limitations of our current gaming technology... you can't blame them. Concept artists are suppose to "think outside the box".

To me it has a Canthan look, especially the boats.

I don't think it's concept art for Gw:En, but who knows? It looks very cool nonetheless.
